40 LIVES LOST ON NORTH QUEENSLAND ROADS

New data has revealed Queensland has recorded the highest road toll increase in the country in the last 12 months.

Figures from the Bureau of Infra-structure and Transport Research Economics show last month was the deadliest month on our nation’s roads since 2017.

Road deaths had increased in Queensland by 8.6 per cent compared to New South Wales at 4.5 per cent.

The data also revealed no state was on track to achieve its targets under the National Road Safety Strategy 2021-30, which aims to halve road deaths from a 2018-2020 base.

“Any death is tragic especially coming into Christmas when families are getting ready to hit the road on holidays.” Mr Willcox said.

Under reforms in August as part of the Federation Funding Agreement on transport infrastructure, states and territories agreed to publish safety ratings of the nation’s roads under a five-star rating system.

“I will continue to push the Federal Government to restore the 80:20 funding arrangement so vital  upgrades to sections with the lowest safety ratings of the Bruce Highway, such as between Mackay and Townsville can be carried out.” Mr Willcox said.

The Coalition has confirmed if elected next year they will reinstate the 80:20 funding model that the  Albanese Labor government slashed.
