THE LNP COMMIT $170,500 TO KALYAN YOUTH SERVICES MACKAY

A Liberal National Government will provide $170,500 to Kalyan Youth Services to provide housing for homeless youths in Mackay.

“Youth homelessness remains a major issue in Mackay, with more and more young people on the brink of homelessness,” Federal Member for Dawson Andrew Willcox said.

“Despite its efforts, Kalyan Youth Services faces ongoing challenges due to limited accommodation capacity.

“In recent years, the not-for-profit organisation saw more than 265 young individuals seeking shelter but had to turn away up to 80 per cent of clients because of insufficient accommodation in Mackay.

“This underscores a significant shortfall in available housing for youth in the region which we need to see improved as soon as possible.

“Kalyan Youth Services does an incredible job providing crisis accommodation, long term housing, personal support, help to go back to school, or to get a job or apprenticeship.

“As soon as I heard Kalyan Youth Services was in desperate need of funding assistance, I wanted to help them renovate the bedrooms, bathrooms and kitchens.

“I am pleased to commit $170,476 if the LNP is elected for the renovation of six two-bedroom units that the group leases out to homeless youths in Mackay.”

Kalyan Youth Services Mackay Housing Service Manager Louise O’Brien said “We really need to partially renovate the six units located on Park Street in Mackay but it can be very hard to find the money being a not-for-profit organisation.”
